Flame of Surrender by Rhiannon Paille

About Flame of Surrender:

The boy who follows death meets the girl who could cause the apocalypse.

Krishani thinks he’s doomed until he meets Kaliel, the one girl on the island of Avristar who isn’t afraid of him. She’s unlike the other girls, she swims with merfolk, talks to trees and blooms flowers with her touch. What he doesn’t know is that she’s a flame, one of nine individually hand crafted weapons, hidden in the body of a seemingly harmless girl.

Nobody has fallen in love with a flame until now. She becomes Krishani’s refuge from the dreams of death and the weather abilities he can’t control. Striking down thousand year old trees with lightning isn’t something he tries to do, it just happens. When the Ferryman dies, Krishani knows that he’s the next and that a lifetime of following death is his destiny.

And Kaliel can’t come with him. The Valtanyana are hunting the flames, the safest place for her is Avristar. Krishani can’t bear to leave her, and one innocent mistake grants the Valtanyana access to their mystical island. They’re coming for Kaliel, and they won’t stop until every last living creature on Avristar is dead. She has to choose, hide, face them, or awaken the flame and potentially destroy herself.

My Review:
4 STARS

When you begin reading Flame of Surrender you are instantly transported to the island of Avristar and get to meet two amazing young characters, Krishani and Kaliel.  Krishani is a young man of the brotherhood that is trying to master his talent but is struggling with dreams about death and he causes destruction with each attempt to control his magic.  He is depressed and lonely, that is until he meets Kaliel.  Krishani is instantly attracted to the young beauty and he can’t help but to be curious about how she seems to have no fear of him or the merfolk.  Although both of them are fighting their attraction to each other it is harder than they thought it would be.  Especially when they learn that Kaliel is a Flame and Krishani is a Ferryman, which means they are not to have anything to do with each other.  Things get very complicated.

I have to admit when I first started reading this story I struggled with trying to understand what was going on. I couldn’t figure out who was what and what it all meant.  As the story progressed though I got some of the answers I was looking for but there are still questions I’m asking.

Although I struggled with understanding the world of Avristar and all the unique people there, I immediately fell in love with Krishani and Kaliel.  They were such dynamic characters; it was hard not to enjoy everything about them.  Kaliel is vulnerable and endearing yet she is brave and very determined to do what she feels is right.  Krishani was also great, very brave and oh so passionate and desirable.  Great character development.  Not sure how I felt about the secondary characters though, Pux was different and I’m not sure I understood him that well.

The author’s attention to detail was what really brought the story alive.  I felt like I was on the island of Avristar walking through the forest and talking to the trees just like Kaliel.  She could communicate with the trees and flowers would bloom wherever she went, it sounded amazing!

The plot was most unique.  This story is unlike anything I’ve read yet.  Very sci-fi yet also romantic and action packed.  Not sure I would have originally picked this book up to read if it wasn’t for being asked to review it but once I did, I LOVED it.  I will be continuing the series for sure! I highly recommend this book to ya fans!

Content: There was a sex scene and some other heated moments in the book but it was not descriptive and I believe it was tastefully done, however I know some of my readers would like to know that information.

Disclosure:  I received a free copy of this book from Bostick Communications in exchange for my honest opinion and review.  All opinions are my own.
